WHAT ARE PRESERVATIVES?
Preservatives are substances added to various products such as food, pharmaceuticals, biological samples, etc., to aid in preserving the product, preventing or slowing down deterioration and decay. TYPES OF PRESERVATIVES
Currently, preservatives are divided into two main groups: natural food preservatives and artificial preservatives, each with the following characteristics:
Natural Preservatives
These are substances used daily in food processing and preservation. They not only do not affect the nutritional content, color, flavor, or texture of the food but also contribute to creating delicious and visually appealing dishes.
These preservatives help preserve various foods by absorbing excess water, inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, preventing the oxidation process in food, and killing bacteria to prevent spoilage.
Some excellent food and spice preservatives include salt, sugar, cooking oil, and basil.
Artificial Preservatives
Artificial food preservatives are additives added to products to prevent changes in their properties, taste, and aroma. They play a crucial role, widely used, and are considered indispensable in the food industry.
Some artificial preservatives commonly found on food labels include BHT, BHA, Sodium nitrate, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium nitrate, Benzoic Acid (E210), etc. They are often most prevalent in processed and packaged foods, condiments, beverages, and even in bread.
